R&D: prototype ontological models for a power-grid district

The client's request

Try ontological modeling and build the first prototype of an ontological model for pilot projects in local energy and distribution-grid districts.

Starting problems

Information exchange between different IT systems was difficult
Current information about equipment, network topology, and measurements needed a structure

How the solution is built

The R&D project produced the first prototype of an ontological model for a distribution-grid district and for local energy facilities, based on RusHydro's common network information model.

Pilot sites

Sections of the small Nadezhdinsky distribution district: Prokhladnoe and the Solovey Klyuch garden community (Primorsky Krai)
Local energy facilities: Verkhoyansk and Batagay (Republic of Sakha, Yakutia)

Main stages

Training power engineers in the basics of information-model engineering and transferring the competencies
Collecting, analyzing, and compiling proposals from RusHydro staff into a roadmap for introducing ontological methods
Data models using elements of the base profile of the power-industry information model (GOST R 58651.2). The prototype stores current information about equipment, network topology, and its states. Information exchange between different systems and applications was also checked

Results

The model passed tests against every requirement of the technical specification
Integration of the ontological model with the systems in use was tried: maintenance and repair, SK-11, GIS, and telemetry
A prototype for automatic generation of regulated reports
The GOST R 58651 information-model profile was extended for this R&D work, with new classes and properties
